The question of a human's relationship with the Divine is one that is eternal, revelatory and profoundly nuanced. It is one that blends tradition, culture, history, social context and human intelligence in the ongoing search for God through the path of love and worship – the path of Islam.

From key concepts of the perception of "salam" to jihad of the soul, Islam: An Introduction journeys through some of the most fundamental concerns of spirituality and the practice of one of the world's most fascinating and misunderstood religions; offering a succinct response to complex ideas with expert navigation and sensitivity.

" Tariq Ramadan: A wolf in sheeps clothing?"

2024-05-02 04:05:07

This is an early review based on an incomplete reading as well as research on the author's background. Although often touted as a moderate Muslim, Ramadan has roots in the Muslim Brotherhood and is far more recognized as an apologist for the more atavistic trends in Islam than a true seeker of Islamic compatibility with pluralistic Western society. His delivery is smooth and persuasive, making it the more susceptible to uncritical reading. At minimum, this book should not be read in isolation from other, Western sources on Islam. Consider "What Went Wrong?" by Bernard Lewis and "Central Asia: Lost Enlightenment" by Richard Starr as examples.

This book is really gorgeous visually and well made. I have already purchased three copies as gifts and intend to purchase many more. It's a very kind, subtle book that you will find necessary to have in your life more importantly great gifts for your non-Muslim neighbours.
